Camp Chaverim, the only Jewish Day Camp on the Virginia Peninsula, has been hosting Israeli Counselors, Schlichim, for more than 15 years! Every summer, we hire two Israeli counselors from the Jewish Agency for Israel.
These young Israelis (usually age 19-22) join our summer staff to represent their country and educate campers about Israeli culture.
They bring a wealth of knowledge and training to Camp Chaverim. Last year the campers learned daily Hebrew words, experienced a ginormous Israel relief map, learned Israeli songs and danced to music and had fun, fun, fun.
Interested in hosting one or both Israeli counselors?
Your hosting them will provide a home away from home for these young Israelis. We are fortunate to have this part of our program subsidized by the generosity of The Belle S. Frank Endowment Fund of the United Jewish Community and we are grateful to community members like you who take the time to bring a little bit of Israel into your homes!
If you are interested, you pick up your counselor Friday at 4pm (note: 1st week has different days and times) and spend the weekend showing them the sights or just hanging out. You give them a place to sleep and food. They keep Kosher style so no meat and milk together but they do not need a kosher home or kosher products. Bring them to Camp by 9am every day for the week and pick him/her/them up at 4pm. In the past, transportation has not been an issue, we can always work with you on that.
We are looking for families to host:
