In 2007 Linda Knapp Lavaty stepped through the doors of the United Jewish Community of the Virginia Peninsula as our new Receptionist. Little did we know on that day that Linda would soon become the voice and face of the front desk, ready to assist every member of our staff and community with anything needed.
She was quick to learn new skills which elevated her position to Administrative Assistant. She loved her job and it showed in how much care she gave to everyone in our community.
Come summertime, she quickly assumed the role of the Camp Chaverim nurse. Whether it was applying bandaids to boo-boos, removing splinters or tics she was there with a gentle hand and open heart.
Her commitment to preschool, camp, and youth programming demonstrated her love for children of all ages. Each year Linda worked hard with our Preschool Parent Committee to ensure that our annual 5K race would be a great success. From solicitation letters to driving the race marshals to their designated stops, Linda was there to make certain it all ran smoothly.
When the world changed with the emergence of Covid, Linda was at her desk each and every day, never absent, even though she was facing her own continued health problems.
Linda was an exemplary mother, grandmother, friend and colleague. Her passing has left a gaping hole in the hearts of so many. She is greatly missed, and this 5K tribute is our way of honoring her memory. If you take a close look at the 5K race logo you will get a glimpse of Linda’s favorite things.
Linda, you are missed, and will not be forgotten.
